GORE-TEX outerwear protects against wind and rain while remaining breathable. However, dirt, body oils, smoke, sunscreen and detergent residue can reduce comfort. Therefore, care is useful, not harmful. The garment’s care label should always be checked first, because product types can require different treatment.[1] [3]

Understand the difference between waterproofing and DWR

Most GORE-TEX garments combine a waterproof membrane with a durable water repellent, or DWR, treatment on the face fabric. DWR helps water bead and roll off the outer surface. When it wears down, the garment may still be waterproof; nevertheless, the outer fabric can become saturated and feel cold or clammy.[2]

Consequently, a jacket that no longer beads water may not be “broken.” First, wash and dry it correctly, then use gentle heat to reactivate the DWR. If beading does not return after that process, a compatible DWR treatment may be needed.[1] [2]

Prepare your Gore-Tex garment for washing

Before washing, zip the main closure, pockets and pit zips. Fasten loose flaps and straps. Then, check pockets for tissues, sand or small objects. GORE-TEX recommends washing standard outerwear in warm water at 40°C/105°F with a small amount of liquid detergent, followed by a second rinse and minimal spinning.[1]

Powder detergents, fabric softener, bleach and stain removers should not be used, because they can affect fabric performance or leave residue.[1] Likewise, avoid washing the garment with heavily soiled clothing. For a stubborn mark, the brand recommends applying liquid detergent locally or using a pre-wash approach rather than a separate stain remover.[1]

Wash standard Gore-Tex outerwear correctly

Use the manufacturer’s care label as the final instruction. For most standard GORE-TEX shells and outerwear, choose a warm, gentle or permanent-press wash at 40°C/105°F with a small amount of liquid detergent. Add an extra rinse where possible and keep the spin low to reduce creasing.[1]

Moreover, do not assume every waterproof garment is identical. GORE-TEX garments with persistent-beading surfaces, such as certain SHAKEDRY products, have special instructions: they should not be tumble dried, ironed, dry cleaned, bleached or treated with DWR.[1] If you are unsure which product you own, follow the inner label or contact the garment maker.

Dry and reactivate water repellency

After washing, standard GORE-TEX outerwear can be line dried or tumble dried on a warm, gentle cycle. High heat should be avoided.[1] Once the garment is dry, tumble dry it for about 20 minutes to reactivate the DWR treatment on the face fabric.[1]

If a dryer is unavailable, a low-temperature iron may be used only if the care label allows it. Place a towel or cloth between the iron and the garment and use no steam.[1] This step should not be used for SHAKEDRY garments or any product whose label prohibits ironing.

Reapply DWR only when needed

After washing, drying and heat reactivation, test the garment by observing how water behaves on the outer surface. If water still fails to bead and roll off, a compatible pump-spray or wash-in DWR may be applied according to its directions.[1] [2] Then, activate the treatment using the specified low-heat method.

DWR is not the waterproof membrane itself. Instead, it supports comfort by reducing surface wetting. Therefore, avoid adding a DWR product simply because the jacket has been worn; use it when wash-and-heat care no longer restores beading.[2]

Store Gore-Tex garments in Singapore

Before storage, make sure the garment is clean and completely dry. Hang it in a cool, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and prolonged heat. In Singapore’s humid conditions, avoid sealing damp outerwear in plastic or leaving it compressed in a bag after travel. Instead, allow it to air out after use and inspect it before storage.

For high-value technical outerwear, difficult contamination, damaged seams or uncertainty about the correct product care, Reward Laundry can help arrange suitable specialist garment care in Singapore.

Gore-Tex garment care FAQs

How often should I wash Gore-Tex? Wash it whenever dirt, smoke, cooking odours or other impurities need to be removed. Regular washing, drying and reheating help maintain DWR performance.[1]

Can I use fabric softener or bleach? No. GORE-TEX advises against powder detergent, fabric softener, stain removers and bleach for standard outerwear care.[1]

Why is my jacket wetting out? The waterproof membrane may still function, but the DWR may have diminished. Wash, dry and use heat to reactivate it; then reapply compatible DWR only if beading does not return.[2]

Can all Gore-Tex garments be tumble dried? No. Standard outerwear can usually be dried gently to reactivate DWR, but SHAKEDRY products have different instructions. Always check the care label.[1]
